Can you explain how Sasha Cohen is going to the 2010 Olympics as an alternate after finishing 4th@Nationals?

I thought that the 3rd place finisher would go as an alternate and at the 2010 Nationals, that is Ashley Wagner. I am not objecting to Sasha being an alternate, just puzzled.

    They have more than one alternate. Ashley Wagner is actually first alternate, Sasha Cohen is second alternate and Christina Gao is third. So if either of the two girls that are on the team get injured, they’d send Ashley Wagner first.
